Discretionary Grants FAQ
The Knott Foundation provides a limited number of Discretionary Grants on a rolling basis throughout the year. These grants, ranging between $500 to $2,500, are designed to increase the Foundation’s grantmaking options as well as its responsiveness to community needs. Discretionary Grants must be in alignment with the Foundation’s area of geographic and programmatic giving.
How are discretionary grants awarded?
The Knott Foundation awards discretionary grants throughout the year at the discretion of the Executive Director and the Foundation’s Trustees. (see list of past Discretionary Grants) Grants are awarded based on the proposed project, the availability of funds, and other current requests for funding.
How do I apply for a discretionary grant?
To apply for a discretionary grant, submit a brief (one page) Letter of Inquiry describing your project or program, needs, project budget, timeframe and alignment with the Knott Foundation’s guidelines.
What is the deadline for submitting requests?
Anytime, on a revolving and funding available basis.
How many discretionary grants are awarded per year?
We average 20-30 discretionary grants annually.
What happens once I submit my request?
Foundation staff will contact you within two months of your request if your organization has been selected to receive funding. If selected, you will need to submit your board of directors list, IRS 501-c-3 letter, and 990 and/or audited financials.
Although not guaranteed, approved funds are usually disbursed within one to two weeks of the discretionary grants approval date. Recipients are required to submit a brief final report on the project.
